Our Counseling Psychology doctoral program is built on core principles that emphasize understanding clients from a developmental perspective, adhering to a health-focused intervention approach, and recognizing how gender, cultural, and institutional factors influence both clients and counselors. Structured as a scientist-practitioner model, the program combines coursework, clinical experience (through practicums, externships, and internships), and research training (culminating in a dissertation). A distinctive aspect is our emphasis on teaching and mentorship, preparing students for academic careers. Throughout all components, we prioritize blending practice, theory, and research. The PhD in Counseling Psychology has been officially recognized by the New York State Department of Education since 1971 for training professional psychologists. Program graduates emerge as fully qualified psychologists with counseling specialization and meet state licensure requirements.
