The Bachelor of Music in Music Theory and Composition merges liberal arts studies with specialized training in music theory and composition, equipping graduates for diverse careers in the music field. Participants engage directly in curating and performing their original pieces, showcased through NYU's resident performance ensembles, school groups, and specially assembled chamber ensembles for composition-focused events. The weekly Composers Forum facilitates networking with established composers and performers, features two student showcases each term, and provides access to premier contemporary music performances across New York City.
Those focusing on composition enjoy numerous collaborative possibilities with performers, dancers, theater artists, and multimedia specialists, spanning music technology, jazz studies, and vocal/instrumental performance disciplines, while connecting with NYC's vibrant arts community.
The curriculum includes orchestration and conducting classes, with regular performance opportunities through NYU ensembles' concerts, residencies, and reading sessions, fostering creative partnerships with performing artists across disciplines.
