Designed for music majors, this combined program enables you to obtain both a Bachelor of Music in Composition or Performance and a Master of Arts in Music Education within five years. Graduates will hold a BM and MA degree while qualifying for New York State teaching licensure in music for pre-K through 12th grade. Currently, admissions for the Bachelor of Music in Music and Master of Arts in Music Education with Initial Certification are temporarily suspended to better serve student needs. The curriculum includes foundational liberal arts courses across humanities, social sciences, and scientific disciplines, alongside core music studies in history, theory, aural skills, and keyboard harmony/improvisation. During your graduate year, student teaching opportunities provide hands-on preparation for becoming a creative music educator.
This dual degree qualifies graduates for New York State initial teaching certification in music (PK-12) after completing two semesters of supervised student teaching placements in NYC public/private schools and community music programs under guidance from veteran music educators and teaching artists.
