The BFA in Art Education program fulfills the qualifications for Illinois State teacher certification while preparing students to teach art in Chicago's diverse public schools and communities. This program explores artistic creation and study through multiple approaches, deeply connected to local traditions and histories of civic engagement and social activism. Students in the BFA Art Education program will refine their personal artistic skills while discovering how to translate intensive art-making processes into teachable methods for their future students.
The BFA in Art Education program builds its foundation on the principle that meaningful art education connects students' personal narratives with both classical and modern artistic expressions, media formats, and cultural practices. Alongside studio art classes, students undertake specialized art education coursework to develop collaborative approaches to instruction, learning, and creative production. Teaching candidates receive valuable hands-on training and guidance by working alongside certified art educators in Chicago Public Schools.
UIC's BFA in Art Education stands as Chicago's sole public university program specifically designed for aspiring art educators, with a focus on developing equitable art education frameworks that empower students to critically examine and contribute to modern cultural discourse.
