Located within the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis (SCA), Latino studies focuses on researching communities of Latin American heritage in the U.S. and incorporating these insights into the nation's self-understanding. The term "Latino" originates from the U.S. context, making Latino studies fundamentally different from Latin American studies. The curriculum explores various themes including racial dynamics, socioeconomic factors, national identity, generational differences, linguistic diversity, gender issues, and sexuality across Latino communities. It also investigates Pan-Latino perspectives, comparative ethnic relations (especially between Latino, African American, and Asian American groups), transnational connections, migration patterns, cultural exchanges, and interactions between U.S. communities and their countries of origin.
NYU's Latino studies program stands out for its academic significance. Being situated in New York City enables a unique interdisciplinary approach combining arts, social sciences, and humanities. Students gain expertise in both fieldwork and archival research, including international opportunities. Additionally, the program emphasizes bilingualism studies, language politics, and cultural analysis while providing courses to enhance bilingual research skills. Existing Spanish and Portuguese resources facilitate this objective, and the city serves as an ideal environment for studying language interactions.
