Drama, deeply intertwined with various artistic and academic fields, serves as an ideal focal point for liberal arts education. Recognizing drama's connections to other disciplines, the English Department hosts the Dramatic Literature Program to foster collaboration across NYU's academic units. Through partnerships with departments and schools involved in drama studies, the program demonstrates how interdisciplinary approaches can create distinctive advantages for both students and faculty.
The program oversees a major and minor in Dramatic Literature, combining courses from throughout the university in dramatic literature, performance, writing, and theatrical production. Alongside foundational courses in drama theory and history, students can choose specialized electives and complement their studies with hands-on training in theater and film production. A key feature of the Dramatic Literature curriculum involves cross-listed courses between CAS and other NYU schools (such as Tisch School of the Arts and Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development). This interdisciplinary approach equips students for advanced academic work in dramatic literature or careers in theater and performance.
