The Department facilitates integrated learning of Russian language, literature, cultural history, and literary theory. Students can combine these studies with programs in Russian and Eurasian history, Jewish Studies, Film Studies (focusing on Russian and East-European cinema), contemporary Russian theater, International Relations, Stanford's Overseas Studies, the Special Languages Program, and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Honors Program. Our undergraduate curriculum appeals to those pursuing careers in journalism, business, international affairs, law, human rights, and academic fields. As the common language across former Soviet territories, Russian proficiency provides access to Eurasia's varied cultures, ethnic groups, economic systems, and religious traditions including Buddhism, Judaism, and Islam. Stanford offers exceptional advantages for Russian and Eurasian studies, boasting unparalleled faculty expertise and world-class resources like Green Library and Hoover Institution's premier collections. Through our program, students conquer a complex language and engage with profound literary works, gaining insight into a distinctive civilization that shaped 20th-century history and continues influencing global affairs today.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
