NYU's American Studies program ranks among the nation's premier offerings in this vibrant discipline. As an interdisciplinary initiative within the Social and Cultural Analysis Department, it examines U.S. society through national, regional, and international perspectives. The curriculum leverages faculty expertise across diverse domains such as historical research, regional studies, literary and cinematic arts, gender theory, critical race studies, political economy, and urban/environmental scholarship. The program adopts an expansive definition of "American," encompassing the United States' historical influence throughout the Americas and its global impact. Learners explore various analytical approaches from both social sciences and humanities, including ethnographic methods, textual interpretation, archival investigation, and cultural critique.
