This specialized program equips undergraduates with a comprehensive understanding of global issues concerning Latin America from the early 20th century onward, utilizing interdisciplinary approaches to examine international relations: including conflict resolution, collaborative efforts, power structures, grassroots organizations, transnational advocacy, global activism, and government-citizen dynamics—covering democratic systems, authoritarian regimes, social disparities, and civic participation.
International Affairs students can tailor their education by selecting a concentration in Middle East Studies, Asian Studies, African Studies, European Studies, or Latin American Studies, leading to a specialized degree. Below are the specific requirements for each concentration. Concentration programs have distinct course structures. Rather than taking 3 regional analysis courses, students complete 4 focused on their chosen region, plus 2 global dynamics courses (including POLS 1160: International Relations). Additionally, study abroad programs must align with the concentration region, and students must fulfill a 4-semester language requirement in an appropriate language (such as Spanish/Portuguese for Latin America, Arabic/Hebrew for the Middle East, or Chinese/Japanese for Asian studies).
