New York University's Africana studies program, housed within the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis (SCA), is an interdisciplinary initiative spanning multiple continents. It focuses on researching the histories, sociopolitical movements, cultural expressions, economic systems, and identity formations of African communities and their global diaspora. The complex interplay of Africa's diverse modernities and the widespread dispersion of its populations—whether through forced or voluntary migration—has reshaped understandings of blackness and African heritage, challenging traditional geographic and theoretical frameworks in 21st-century scholarship. The program serves as an intellectual hub for comparative studies examining diasporic communities across Africa, the Americas, Caribbean nations, European societies, Asia-Pacific territories, and Middle Eastern regions through historical, cultural, economic, political, and practical lenses.
NYU's Ghana study abroad program provides undergraduate students with unique access to African academic environments. Specialized Africana studies curriculum is available at NYU's Accra location. The initiative collaborates closely with NYU's Institute of African-American Affairs and Africa House on community engagement projects and research endeavors. Degree options include undergraduate and graduate programs, along with combined MA tracks in journalism, economics, and museum studies.
