To earn a Master's degree, candidates must either pass the Master's qualifying exam or secure a research advisor in their initial semester, establish a Graduate Committee, and produce a thesis. Additionally, Master's students need to complete or transfer a minimum of 30 course credits and pass either a final oral exam or the doctoral comprehensive exam. Among these credits, at least 21 must be in physics/geophysics, with no more than 3 for independent study or similar courses, up to 6 for thesis work, and a maximum of 9 credits from courses numbered 450-499. Successful completion of these requirements is mandatory.
