NMSU's history program teaches students to examine and understand the past through diverse viewpoints while recognizing their own contributions to historical narratives. Our studies encompass everything from personal accounts like oral histories, diaries, and letters to cultural artifacts such as songs, literature, official records, and even recipes. Both bachelor's and master's students utilize primary sources with various analytical approaches to explore historical inquiries. The department prioritizes meticulous research alongside strong writing and communication abilities. Graduates from NMSU's history programs emerge prepared to succeed in diverse careers and participate actively in our evolving society. The History Department at NMSU thrives as an energetic hub for inquisitive learners. Students have restored historic Las Cruces buildings, produced historical podcasts and films, organized exhibits at the Branigan Cultural Center, and designed apps to catalog the city's murals. Our Public History program ranks among the nation's most established.
