Music is a comprehensive academic field with core studies in both theory and performance. The curriculum offers a theoretical grasp of music's evolution and composition, combined with essential technical skills, preparing students to showcase artistic expression and innovation as solo performers or ensemble members. To enhance these abilities, elective courses in piano and music history are recommended. The program mandates four semesters each of music theory, private instruction, and ensemble participation, equipping students with the foundation needed to transfer to a four-year university for advanced studies in composition, performance, or music education.
To obtain an Associate in Arts in Music for Transfer degree, students must complete at least 60 transferable semester units toward the CSU system, following either the IGETC or CSU GE breadth requirements, plus an 18-unit major. A minimum 2.0 GPA in all CSU-transferable courses is required, with all major courses completed at a C grade or higher. Those pursuing this transfer degree are exempt from additional local graduation criteria. A Pass grade is acceptable for major courses if taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.
