The Classics major starts with foundational courses in Greek and Roman Civilization. As students progress, they develop advanced skills in an ancient language and choose from electives covering mythology, ancient history, art, archaeology, and translated literature. Explore the languages, histories, and cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome while learning to read original texts by Homer, Plato, Vergil, and Cicero.
Our department provides major and minor programs that critically analyze the cultures, ideas, and values of ancient civilizations, fostering awareness of both cultural patterns and diversity. This approach helps students understand how the past influences the present while developing historical perspectives on enduring issues like race, gender, and class. Students gain timeless analytical skills applicable to diverse careers, receiving not just job training but a comprehensive education that transcends socioeconomic barriers and prepares them for leadership roles. The program provides strong academic preparation for graduate studies in Classics or related fields, with dedicated mentorship opportunities. We remain committed to training Latin teachers for New Jersey high schools and K-6 educators with Humanities specializations. Additionally, we offer and expand degree completion options for both traditional undergraduates and returning adult learners.
