The Master of Science in Optics and Photonics represents a collaborative, cross-disciplinary initiative overseen by the Optics Program Committee, involving three key departments: Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Chemistry and Biochemistry. Prospective students submit their applications specifically to the Optics and Photonics Graduate Program, with admission granted through one of the partner departments determined by faculty alignment and applicant preferences. This specialized degree differs from conventional departmental graduate programs by mandating coursework that spans multiple disciplines, requiring study in at least two participating departments. This multidisciplinary approach enables deeper exploration of optical theories and practical applications than traditional single-discipline degrees permit. Every optics student receives guidance from a faculty advisor within one of the three departments, supported by a supervisory committee comprising faculty members from at least two of the program's collaborating departments.
