Department summary
As the most essential scientific discipline, physics serves as the cornerstone for virtually all technical domains.
The Physics Department at Missouri S&T is committed to:
Conducting pioneering physics research to broaden human understanding and drive
technological innovation.
Educating and preparing future scientists and engineers.
Sharing knowledge to benefit Missouri, the country, and the global community.
Our department holds a distinctive position within both the University of Missouri System and the state. We maintain robust research initiatives in astrophysics, atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physics, and condensed matter/materials physics. The AMO physics program stands as the sole offering of its kind in the University of Missouri System. Our astrophysics program hosts Missouri's exclusive LIGO (gravitational wave) research team. The department actively engages in cross-disciplinary work, particularly in materials science and advanced computing.
