The Department of Physics at Western Michigan University provides advanced degree programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy qualifications. These programs equip students for professional opportunities across industrial, academic, and national laboratory settings. Cutting-edge research forms a fundamental component of our curriculum. Specialization options include:
Atomic and nuclear physics, with possible astrophysics applications
Condensed matter and materials physics
Physics education - Available solely at the master's level within the Physics Department, including thesis options. Doctoral candidates pursuing physics education should consider the science education: physics track offered by WMU's Mallinson Institute for Science Education.
Students entering this program are expected to have acquired a bachelor’s degree in physics or at least an equivalent amount of experience and training (including training in mathematics at the appropriate level).
