The Child Development program examines the social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic, and physical/motor development of children from prenatal stages through teenage years. Students enroll in child development classes to pursue certificates or permits, work toward an associate degree, prepare for university transfer, or enhance their professional skills. Career opportunities span various fields serving children and families, including infant/toddler care, preschool instruction (including Head Start), K-12 education, special education for young children, program management, school counseling, child psychology, advocacy, social services, and community programs. Learners can obtain one of the mentioned associate degrees by completing a certificate of achievement along with MiraCosta College's general education requirements for an Associate in Arts degree (refer to Associate Degrees section).
