This interdisciplinary field bridges social and physical sciences with planning, governance, and policy challenges related to natural resource and environmental utilization, focusing particularly on land and water systems. Key aspects encompass diverse resource demands and applications, including stakeholder perspectives and governance processes, along with assessing socioeconomic and ecological consequences of different policy and management approaches. Findings guide decision-making across public, private, and nonprofit sectors while supporting both structured and informal environmental education initiatives. The program examines and implements principles of environmental equity and socio-ecological adaptability across all focus areas. Academic studies, investigations, and extension activities tackle concerns at local, regional, national, and global scales.
The CSUS graduate curriculum caters to students pursuing community sustainability challenges in domestic or global contexts. Generally, faculty researchers and graduate candidates in this program concentrate on community food and agricultural networks, environmental resource management, tourism and recreational systems, educational outreach and civic participation, and global development initiatives. These expansive themes intersect with each other and with sustainable tourism and conservation area administration - central focuses of the department's additional MS and PhD programs. Our work in these domains applies to both domestic and international scenarios, with many faculty and students engaged in global development contexts.
