The History Department at MSU boasts a vibrant Latin American and Caribbean History program rooted in longstanding traditions. Recently, this program has gained remarkable momentum. Our faculty has expanded with four new Latin American specialists, complemented by two professors deeply engaged with Latin American scholarship. Current faculty expertise spans these key regions: Brazil, Mexico, the Spanish Caribbean, the Southern Cone, and the Atlantic World. Thematic concentrations include: Gender Studies, Luso-Brazilian and Atlantic Studies, Urban History, Political Culture, Institutional Development, and Labor/Migration Studies.
Our doctoral program in History cultivates broad historical knowledge, focused expertise, and research skills for diverse career paths in academia, research, public service, and professional historical work. Doctoral candidates may specialize in: Ancient civilizations, Medieval studies, Early modern period, European history, Modern Western Europe, Russian studies, Eastern Europe, American history, African-American studies, Atlantic World history, Latin American/Caribbean studies, Comparative Black history, African studies, Asian history, and Women's/Gender history.
