The PhD represents an advanced research qualification. Its core purpose focuses on cultivating professional expertise in historical investigation, with most graduates pursuing academic teaching positions. Our department aims to equip doctoral candidates not just for traditional research and instruction roles, but also for diverse career paths such as public history and archival work. The PhD curriculum offers structured opportunities to develop: (1) comprehensive knowledge of a chosen discipline along with its contemporary debates, (2) specialized expertise in the student's primary research and teaching concentration, (3) foundational understanding of a secondary field, (4) methodological research skills, (5) necessary language proficiency, and (6) completion of an original dissertation that makes a meaningful contribution to historical scholarship.

You must receive your undergraduate degree (U.S. baccalaureate or equivalent) from an institution of recognized standing before enrollment in the Graduate School.
