The Keyboard Area at Michigan State University nurtures each student's complete artistic growth with personalized guidance, fostering achievement and career readiness. Aspiring musicians can specialize in composition, music education, or performance, with options to combine music studies with another academic discipline through dual degrees. The program also provides music minor choices and honors pathways for MSU Honors College participants. Central to the Keyboard Area's approach is one-on-one teaching, enhanced by literature courses and masterclasses. Every student engages in Piano Performance sessions where faculty collectively mentor performances. Undergraduate students must complete an accompanying course led by the Collaborative Piano Director, developing skills to partner with singers and instrumentalists. Performance opportunities abound through recitals, studio sessions, and both campus and external venues, allowing students to showcase solo and ensemble work. The program features graduate studies in piano pedagogy alongside undergraduate teaching courses, which include hands-on experience instructing young learners at the Community Music Schools in East Lansing and Detroit.
