The Creative Writing Program provides undergraduate students with an immersive, exploratory journey in artistic expression. Our nationally acclaimed faculty, recipients of prestigious awards, instruct diverse courses covering specialized techniques in fiction, poetry, drama, and creative nonfiction. As active literary professionals, our faculty connect students with groundbreaking contemporary authors who conduct classroom visits, lead writing workshops, and present public readings and cross-disciplinary performances. The curriculum additionally explores publishing history, editorial processes, and includes career-focused programming for aspiring writers. Here, personal and social narratives intertwine - we approach writing as both a means of self-discovery and a vehicle for cultural critique. We embrace literature's evolving societal roles and recognize each new generation's influence on literary traditions. Our doors are open to writers of all backgrounds, languages, and experience levels who seek to engage with literary heritage on their own creative terms. Within our program, artistic expression flourishes as a dynamic form of global engagement. Beyond classroom walls, we organize visits to local cultural venues and proudly support the student-run MSU Creative Writing Club. We also publish the Red Cedar Review, among America's longest-running student-edited literary magazines.
