The one-year Science Writing graduate program awards a Master of Science degree, designed for aspiring writers who want to communicate scientific and technological topics to broad audiences. This includes publishing in mainstream magazines and newspapers, creating popular science books, developing museum exhibits, or producing content for television and radio. The program welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, including science, engineering, journalism, or writing undergraduates, professional journalists, practicing scientists, science historians, and individuals with advanced degrees.
At its core, the program features an intensive year-long seminar in advanced science writing. Students also select elective courses each term, produce a significant thesis project, gain laboratory observation experience, and complete a professional internship.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
The minimum score required for the IELTS is 7 and the minimum score for TOEFL is 100 (iBT) 600 (PBT).
