Working alongside various campus centers and programs, the Department of Comparative Literature provides a cutting-edge, theory-driven comparative perspective on the Middle East and North Africa. Featuring experts in Arabophone and Francophone North African, Turkish, and broader Middle Eastern literature and culture, we champion interdisciplinary, transnational, and transhistorical approaches that transcend traditional Orientalist or philological frameworks. Our faculty actively engage with topics like avant-garde movements, (post)modernism, Islam and secular critique, gender and sexuality studies, postcolonial theory, language reform and multilingualism, as well as narrative theory and literary analysis. Collaborative initiatives with African Studies (including the dual-title PhD program), the Middle East Studies Standing Committee, and the Penn State Society for the Study of Religion connect scholars across History, Anthropology, African Studies, Literature, and Political Science. The department also hosts Penn State's Arabic program, offering domestic and international opportunities for Arabic language study and instruction.
