This graduate certificate program provides advanced training in children's and young adult literature to support your career aspirations in education, library science, or doctoral studies. Elementary, middle, and high school educators will strengthen their teaching practice by developing critical reading skills of youth literature while meeting district professional development standards. Library professionals can deepen their knowledge in curating collections for young audiences. Those planning doctoral studies will gain specialized preparation in these literary fields.
Comprising four courses (12 credit hours total), this program enhances expertise in youth literature while advancing professional objectives. Doctoral-bound students receive focused preparation for specializing in children's and young adult literature at advanced levels. K-12 educators expand their literary knowledge and fulfill professional development mandates. Library professionals develop specialized skills in building and managing youth collections. With careful course scheduling, students may complete the certificate within twelve months.

Qualification Requirements
To be eligible for the graduate certificate in literature for children and young adults, students need not have an undergraduate degree in English, but they must have a B.A. or B.S. degree and meet the requirements for admission to the College of Graduate Studies at YSU. For Graduate Admissions, please have the testing agency send official test scores directly to YSU if they are required for your program of interest (GRE, GMAT, MAT, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.). The institution code is 1975. Unofficial test scores cannot be used for admission purposes. TOEFL scoreA minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 79-80 on the Internet-based (IBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language by graduates of foreign universities who are nonnative English speakers. (Scores over two years old by the beginning of the term applicants wish to enter are not acceptable.) Arrange with the Educational Testing Service to have your official TOEFL score sent to our office. Those students with below a 2.7 cumulative undergraduate GPA (Grade Point Average) will be asked to take the GRE or the MAT (Miller Analogies Test) per our Graduate School policy unless their program of interest has an alternative testing/GPA requirement. The College of Graduate Studies will accept the academic version of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) as an alternative to the TOEFL exam for international students (A score of 6.5 on the IELTS test equates to a 550 on the paper-based TOEFL).
