Would you like to immerse yourself in the study of English literary history? This graduate program enables you to do precisely that. Students pursuing this degree focus on literature across extensive historical periods, completing a minimum of four reading courses: two covering pre-1800 literary and cultural studies, and two examining post-1800 works. With approval from the graduate studies director, certain seminar courses may count toward these requirements.

Undergraduate major or its equivalent is required. Graduate Record Examination: the General Test is required for all applicants. The Subject Test in English Literature is also required for the M.A./Ph.D. in Literature. A potentially superior student who has not majored in English may be admitted conditionally, but must remove deficiencies without graduate credit.
