As one of the world's pioneering programs in its field, MICA's photography department has a century-long history of excellence.
Today's program honors this tradition by offering comprehensive exploration of both analog and digital photography, fostering diverse creative approaches. Students gain technical proficiency through cutting-edge digital labs, traditional and experimental darkroom techniques, while developing a nuanced understanding of photography's evolution and current trends.
The department regularly updates its Instagram with student achievements, exhibition news, visiting artist lectures, career opportunities, and program updates.
The curriculum offers two starting points: Light & Color: Digital Photo I and/or Shadows & Time: Film Photo I. These foundation courses develop essential skills in visual perception, camera techniques, classic black-and-white darkroom work, and modern digital processes.
Intermediate courses like Reimagining the Darkroom, Studio & Location Lighting, and Digital Materials & Methods further strengthen photographic expertise.
The required History of Photography and Contemporary Directions courses cultivate critical analysis and contextual understanding, tracing the medium's origins while examining modern concepts and influential artists. Professional Strategies prepares students for real-world success by covering essential business skills, grant applications, and effective self-promotion techniques.
