The periodontics program spans three years, requiring students to complete at least 50 credit hours - including 12 clinical practice credits and 6 thesis credits. Additional coursework focuses specifically on periodontology. Participants engage in three years of hands-on patient care. Successful completion of both academic and clinical components leads to specialty certification from Marquette University Graduate School, while fulfilling research requirements earns a master's degree.
Prospective master's students must enroll under Plan A, choosing between traditional thesis or publication options. To earn the degree, candidates must complete graduate core courses with a B- or better, execute a relevant clinical or basic science research project, and successfully defend their work before an advisory committee that determines defense format and content.
We strongly recommend students align their research with their dental specialty. The graduate program director assists in project selection, with emphasis on clinically significant research for advanced dental specialty students whenever feasible.
