The UTHSC College of Dentistry provides postgraduate dental programs that enable residents to earn a Master of Dental Science (MDS) degree through the College of Graduate Health Sciences (CGHS). Specialty areas including Endodontics, Forensic Dentistry, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontology, and Prosthodontics mandate MDS completion for both dental certification and residency fulfillment. While Endodontics residents begin the MDS program alongside clinical training, they may opt out before degree completion. Oral Surgery residents, however, are exempt from the MDS program. These MDS programs aim to deliver modern research exposure in dental sciences for postdoctoral clinical specialists. Through structured coursework and research, participants gain both classical and current insights into scientific approaches for treating dental and facial conditions. The curriculum equips dental specialists with versatile career pathways—whether in clinical practice, academia, or research—while emphasizing the vital connections between clinical dentistry, foundational science, and investigative research.
