The Exercise and Rehabilitation Science graduate program offers master's and PhD degrees through a clinical research curriculum housed in the College of Health Sciences. This program operates within the prestigious Department of Physical Therapy, recognized among the top 10% of over 200 accredited physical therapy programs across the United States. As a member of the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeastern Wisconsin (CTSI), this program stands out as one of few CTSI initiatives nationwide focused specifically on clinical research training for physical therapy and rehabilitation science professionals. The PhD curriculum caters to medical practitioners, rehabilitation specialists, and healthcare providers holding advanced degrees who seek translational and clinical research expertise. The doctoral curriculum expands upon clinical foundations (including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medical ethics, and patient care) with specialized coursework in rehabilitation physiology, neurophysiology applications, statistical methods, genetic studies, and research design. Participants benefit from cutting-edge research facilities within the exercise science program and Physical Therapy Department's specialized laboratories for movement disorders and rehabilitation studies. Key program requirements include: presenting dissertation proposals effectively, demonstrating thorough literature comprehension, formulating relevant research questions, systematically collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining ethical standards for human subject research.
