The Department of Biological Sciences provides a challenging PhD program designed to cultivate researchers and educators through rigorous scientific training. Participants develop academic mastery by nurturing their natural inquisitiveness and understanding the discipline of scientific inquiry. This curriculum delivers cutting-edge biological education, preparing graduates for professional paths in academic institutions, corporate research, and public sector roles.

Our biological sciences graduate program features distinctive multidisciplinary research opportunities across specialized fields including Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Developmental Biology, Neuroscience, Microbiology, Ecological Studies, Environmental Science, Evolutionary Biology, and Physiology. Alumni pursue successful careers in higher education, industrial research, and governmental agencies. Each student's primary focus involves original dissertation research that adheres to stringent quality benchmarks. The department's wide-ranging expertise enables scholars to explore numerous specialized research areas.

First-year candidates complete three laboratory rotations to identify optimal faculty-student pairings. These temporary placements allow exploration of laboratories aligned with students' research interests. By the second semester's conclusion, students collaboratively select a faculty advisor to oversee both research direction and academic coursework. Our department's intimate research groups foster close faculty-student collaboration, resulting in dissertation findings published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals.

This specialization provides thorough training in molecular biology and genetic methodologies. Students will master gene cloning, protein function analysis through organismal gene expression, and gene expression assessment via real-time PCR or microarray technology. Those focusing on genetics will study fundamental principles from Mendelian inheritance to reverse genetics, including gene duplication patterns and genomic maintenance. The program ensures deep comprehension of genomic-level gene manipulation for functional analysis. Research concentrations within this specialization encompass epigenetic gene regulation, DNA recombination processes, microRNA mechanisms, mRNA splicing dynamics, and tRNA biological functions.
