The Personality, Individual Differences, and Behavior Genetics (PIB) graduate program prepares behavioral scientists to study how and why people differ in their actions, thoughts, and feelings. Program graduates often pursue academic careers or research positions at applied institutions. Rooted in Minnesota's rich history of personality and behavioral genetics research, the PIB program examines diverse aspects of individual variation. These include intellectual capabilities, emotional traits, motivations, moral qualities, interpersonal behaviors, psychological preferences, societal views, educational performance, and psychological conditions. The curriculum provides comprehensive instruction in psychological assessment techniques and discoveries about human variation. Students learn personality measurement approaches, explore the causes of personality differences, and study how personality influences crucial life outcomes like relationships, career success, and mental health. The behavioral genetics training focuses on analyzing how genetic and environmental factors interact to shape individual characteristics.
