To address the growing need for qualified medical physicists across healthcare facilities and industries, LSU's Department of Physics & Astronomy provides a CAMPEP-accredited Master of Science program specializing in Medical Physics. This program equips students for clinical medical physics careers, including preparation for certification examinations administered by the American Board of Radiology or equivalent organizations. Graduates from this concentration are fully prepared to either join a medical physics residency or pursue further doctoral studies.
The first year focuses on core medical physics principles: radiation detection and instrumentation, safety protocols, radiobiology, and related subjects. During the second year, alongside advanced coursework, students gain hands-on clinical experience through a practicum at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, collaborating directly with medical physicists, dosimetrists, and radiation oncologists.
Throughout their second and third years, students in the medical physics concentration conduct hypothesis-based thesis research. This work concludes with a public presentation and defense, with findings suitable for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.
