The Applied Physics degree program provides outstanding preparation for students aiming to pursue a Ph.D. in physics or engineering, or for those seeking teaching positions at community colleges. Those who choose the Thesis Option will gain qualifications suitable for industrial or research laboratory positions.

Research opportunities exist in Biophysics, Computational Physics, Medical Physics, and Optics, with the department's primary focus being applied optics. The Physics and Optical Science Department oversees interdisciplinary M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Optical Science and Engineering, collaborating with five departments (Physics & Optical Science, Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering & Engineering Science), along with the Center for Optoelectronics & Optical Communications and the Center for Precision Metrology. Another key focus is biophysics, which intersects with Ph.D. programs in Chemistry, Nanoscale Science, Biology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, and Applied Mathematics. The M.S. in Applied Physics program fosters interdisciplinary education and research across diverse fields such as: Statistical and computational physics, Biological molecular motors, Protein folding and dynamics, Drug discovery based on molecular structure
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Micro-optics and nanophotonics, Fiber and integrated optics, Optoelectronic materials and devices
Biomedical optics, Optical interferometry and metrology, Optical fabrication, Nanoscale imaging and spectroscopy, Adaptive optics
