The Advanced Standing Program offers qualified students who hold a bachelor's degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program the opportunity to receive up to one year of credit toward their MSW. Admission typically requires a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, though special considerations may be given with supporting documentation. Students must formally apply for advanced standing, as eligibility isn't automatic even with an accredited BSW. Only foundation-level social work courses with grades of B or higher can be transferred for credit.
All advanced standing students at LIU must complete SWK 614, a bridge course connecting undergraduate and graduate studies. Titled "Advanced Principles of Administrative and Clinical Practice within an Interdisciplinary Context," this course covers advanced clinical practice with individuals and families while introducing role theory applications in organizational and community settings. SWK 614 ensures advanced standing students gain equivalent preparation to those completing the standard foundation year.
