The M.S. Ed. in Students with Disabilities Generalist (7-12) equips future educators to become skilled, compassionate, and motivational teachers for special education students in grades seven through twelve. This 30-credit program trains teacher candidates to develop supportive learning environments for students facing diverse disabilities and challenges. Throughout the program, participants will explore multiple instructional approaches and methods for executing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in both inclusive and self-contained classroom settings. The curriculum covers all thirteen federally and state-recognized disability categories. With at least 50 hours of fieldwork, supervised teaching practice, and hands-on learning opportunities, candidates gain direct experience working with these student populations.
While earning this degree, candidates will study adolescent development theories, motivational strategies, and learning processes for students in grades 7-12. They'll develop expertise in helping special needs students acquire new knowledge while fostering self-reliance and peer collaboration. The program also teaches assessment methods for evaluating academic progress and social growth, along with inclusive classroom management strategies. The experience concludes with an intensive semester-long practicum, enabling candidates to apply their specialized skills in actual special education classrooms.
