This program offers specialized education in Art Therapy and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, comprising 60 total credits. Students complete 48 credits within the existing Clinical Art Therapy curriculum and 12 credits through the Department of Counseling and Development.
Graduates qualify for New York State's Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) credential and can take the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE) for national registration. The program holds national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Prospective students should verify their state's specific licensure requirements.
Classes maintain an intimate learning environment with 8-22 students. The curriculum explores the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of painting, drawing, and sculpture across diverse age groups (children, teens, and adults). Artistic creation forms a core component, with students producing work in all foundational seminars. The Drawing, Painting and Sculpture for the Art Therapist course concludes with a public exhibition of student artwork.
The program fosters a collaborative clinical art therapy network involving students, faculty, academic departments, and local artists to create a dynamic training environment. Students complete 700 internship hours at one of 30-40 available sites. Research represents a key program focus, requiring nine thesis/research credits. Student research has been featured at national conferences, and faculty are recognized for their contributions to various clinical subjects within the art therapy field.
