The 120-credit Bachelor of Science program in Childhood Education and Special Education equips you to become a skilled, compassionate, and motivational educator for children with and without disabilities in grades 1 through 6.
During your undergraduate studies, you'll explore child development theories, motivation strategies, and learning approaches for children aged 6 to 12. You'll develop expertise in fostering student engagement, encouraging responsibility, and promoting collaborative learning. The curriculum covers diverse subjects from science to music to language arts, while teaching assessment methods for intellectual, social, and physical development. You'll learn classroom management techniques for diverse learners and receive comprehensive training in supporting students with special needs through various educational approaches and practical applications. The program concludes with a full-semester student teaching placement, providing hands-on classroom experience. Graduates qualify for New York State Initial Teaching Certification in both Childhood Education and Special Education.
Upon fulfilling all degree requirements, passing New York State licensure exams (EAS, CST, and edTPA), and completing mandatory certification workshops, you'll receive Initial teaching certification from the New York State Department of Education (NYSED) in both Childhood Education and Special Education.
