The BS dual certification program in Adolescent Mathematics Education and Students with Disabilities trains future educators to become skilled, compassionate, and motivational teachers for both general mathematics and special education at the secondary level (grades 7-12). This curriculum provides aspiring teachers with the essential tools, understanding, and framework to inspire middle and high school students across different ability levels, helping them grasp core concepts in problem-solving, reasoning, and probability. Students gain hands-on experience through at least 150 hours of classroom observation and participation, usually integrated into mandatory education courses. The program features guided student teaching at two different grade levels, offering opportunities to shadow experienced educators, connect with learners, and comprehend adolescent cognitive development in mathematics. Graduates who fulfill all degree requirements and pass New York State certification exams will qualify for two teaching certifications upon earning their bachelor's degree.
Mathematics education majors deepen their expertise in geometric principles, algebraic concepts, calculus, set theory, probability, and foundational mathematical reasoning. The program develops candidates' instructional techniques and problem-solving approaches, enabling them to effectively teach mathematics using diverse instructional materials tailored to different learning needs and academic challenges.
