The EES Department provides a graduate program connected to nationally renowned research in crucial Earth & Environmental Science fields. Our globally distinguished faculty collaborate closely with students on research initiatives while delivering innovative graduate courses. Vibrant research discussion circles, weekly departmental gatherings and seminars, plus an annual graduate research symposium foster extensive dialogue, teamwork, and a stimulating academic atmosphere. EES grants both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Earth and Environmental Sciences. Within a comprehensive Earth-systems framework, students conduct fundamental research across various subfields including ecology, environmental science, biogeochemistry, geology, geochemistry, and geophysics. The M.S. program mandates a minimum of 24 coursework credit hours, totaling 30 credits, along with a thesis expected to meet publication standards. The Ph.D. program requires additional credits (based on entry level) and culminates in a dissertation, preceded by two examinations: one evaluating comprehensive training (qualifying exam) and another assessing specialized knowledge for the dissertation proposal (proposal defense).
