Our planet's environment has developed over geological time periods, shaped by fluctuations in solar radiation, Earth's reflectivity, and atmospheric gas composition. Studying historical climate shifts and Earth's adaptations provides context for today's accelerated transformations. The Geological Sciences department at CU conducts global change research by analyzing data from diverse geological records, including ice cores, ocean sediments, and land formations. Our facilities span both the Benson Geological Sciences building and the new SEEL complex, housing advanced laboratories equipped to analyze elemental and isotopic compositions that directly indicate or serve as proxies for past environmental conditions.
