Co-managed by the College of Arts and Sciences and the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, IDEAS is a four-year honors curriculum enabling students to earn a bachelor's degree with substantial coursework from both colleges. The program appeals to engineering enthusiasts who also have a strong interest in arts and sciences, as well as to those primarily interested in arts and sciences who recognize the value and real-world application of a solid engineering foundation. According to William Best, professor of practice in mechanics and mechanical engineering and program co-director, participants in Lehigh's initiative are essentially creating their own educational product by designing their customized degree. Regular semester meetings help each student chart their academic path, making it a demanding yet supported journey where they receive continuous guidance.
