The Deaf Education specialization equips future educators to support deaf and hard-of-hearing learners in diverse environments, including inclusive classrooms, itinerant services, resource rooms, and specialized public or residential programs. Hands-on fieldwork and teaching labs complement rigorous coursework in literacy, math, science, and social studies, preparing candidates for certification as highly qualified teachers in deaf education, reading, and mathematics. The program's instructional approaches incorporate specialized techniques for addressing hearing-related challenges, fostering language acquisition in both English and American Sign Language through bilingual-bicultural methods and adaptive technologies. The structured curriculum culminates in thematic unit development, ensuring graduates can deliver comprehensive instruction across all academic subjects while supporting transition planning and students with multiple needs. Upon completion, candidates qualify for Ohio teaching licensure for deaf and hard-of-hearing students from pre-K through 12th grade.
