Exploring literature, music, cinema, television, gaming, retail culture, athletics, graphic novels, cartoons, historical spectacles like bear-baiting and minstrel performances, and countless other facets of human expression. Cultural studies examines these diverse elements alongside theoretical frameworks that illuminate their social and historical importance: from Marxist analysis and feminist critique to poststructuralist thought, psychological perspectives, LGBTQ+ studies, colonial legacy examinations, gender discourse, digital culture research, and racial/ethnic investigations. What unites cultural studies scholars is their dedication to cross-disciplinary approaches, historical contextualization, and active participation in societal discourse.
Student research projects have covered subjects ranging from cyberpunk's environmental themes to visual narratives from Japanese American WWII internment, modern fiction and cinema, existential philosophy, speculative fiction, tabletop gaming, horror cinema, the MeToo phenomenon, postmodern cultural shifts, and numerous other compelling topics.
