Geographic information systems (GIS) integrate computer hardware, software, spatial data, and personnel to systematically gather, maintain, process, examine, and visualize geographically linked data. Mastering GIS has become an essential competency across academic research and various public and private sector organizations. Students pursuing advanced degrees in diverse fields including agronomy, biology, economics, engineering, geography, landscape architecture, and sociology gain advantages by utilizing GIS alongside complementary technologies like GPS, remote sensing, geostatistics, and programming to process, evaluate, simulate, and visualize spatial information.
The Geography graduate program offers a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science (GIScience), equipping students with expertise to thrive in this growing field or integrate GIScience principles into their academic disciplines. The curriculum consists of three key elements: prerequisite courses for program admission, core geospatial classes covering GIS and satellite remote sensing, and elective options for delving into advanced GIScience topics or applying these concepts within geography or related fields. This GIScience certificate can be earned independently or alongside graduate degree requirements at Kansas State University. Overseen by the Geography Department, the program is guided by a cross-disciplinary team of educators and researchers from throughout K-State.
