Students pursuing a Ph.D. in physiology through the Animal Sciences and Industry (ASI) program will engage in a broad, multidisciplinary curriculum that may involve working with diverse species such as cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, goats, and poultry. The physiology coursework and seminars integrate knowledge from various ASI disciplines and related departments like statistics, biochemistry, biology, psychology, and anatomy/physiology. Doctoral candidates can enhance their teaching abilities by participating in ASI's robust undergraduate program, with many also supporting state and regional extension initiatives. Research opportunities span fundamental studies in molecular, cellular, and tissue biology, translational work in endocrinology, reproductive biology, stress responses, immunology, and neurobehavioral processes, as well as applied research in reproduction, health management, behavior studies, and animal welfare. This physiology-focused graduate education equips students for professional paths in animal science industries, biotechnology, academic research, instruction, technical consulting, extension services, and other physiology-related specialties.
