The Epidemiology doctoral program is rooted in public health and population-based studies, equipping students to investigate health challenges through epidemiological approaches. This PhD involves two years of structured classes, followed by a minimum of two years dedicated to research. Participants must fulfill teaching requirements, including training and serving as teaching assistants for both methodological and subject-specific courses. The program also mandates a written comprehensive exam, a mock oral exam, preliminary assessments, various presentation formats (oral and poster), and culminates in a dissertation with its defense.
Doctoral candidates concentrate on generating novel insights through their studies. The curriculum includes fundamental methodological training supplemented by specialized coursework, allowing students to customize their academic path in collaboration with advisors. Dissertation projects must demonstrate originality, meet publication standards, and gain approval from both the Department and a thesis review committee. A key requirement involves direct involvement in primary data collection, either as part of the dissertation or integrated into other research activities during the program.
