The Social and Behavioral Sciences PhD program prepares students for careers as researchers, health educators, and specialists in health promotion or communication within public health. The program emphasizes applying social and behavioral science theories to investigate modern health challenges, particularly examining and shaping health-related social environments and behaviors. Beyond classroom learning, students undertake a first-year written examination and acquire hands-on research experience. Under faculty supervision, they create and defend a dissertation proposal during an oral examination, culminating in a final public dissertation defense seminar.
This rigorous program offers comprehensive training in research methods, theoretical frameworks, and program development/assessment. Research concentrations include two key domains: health education/communication and the social/psychological factors affecting health outcomes.
