UCLA's sociology department ranks among the best, distinguished by its comprehensive coverage of the field. Our program uniquely encompasses the full spectrum of sociological study, from conversation analysis and ethnomethodology to mathematical sociology, with nearly every key specialty included. Faculty research explores diverse topics across time (from Renaissance Italy to 18th century China to the digital future) and space (from Los Angeles to Eastern Europe or Korea), examining phenomena from intimate interactions to global empires. Methodologically pluralistic, we house the most ethnographers of any department while maintaining strong quantitative research capabilities. Our scholars employ varied approaches including direct observation, natural data collection, large-scale surveys, archival research, experiments, and secondary data analysis.
An international student whose post-secondary education is completed outside of the U.S. is expected to hold a degree representing completion of at least four years of study with above average scholarship from a university or university-level institution.
All applicants are expected to submit transcripts from all colleges where applicants have studied (the department's evaluation considers not only the record in sociology, but all undergraduate work and graduate work, where relevant, including coursework in English composition, logic, linguistics, and mathematics); a statement of purpose, not to exceed three typewritten double-spaced pages, outlining the reasons for pursuing graduate work, interests within sociology, and any pertinent intellectual and career experiences and interests; and copies of one or two term papers or research reports written by the applicant.
